いわゆる，同性間配偶行動 （intrasexual or same-sex mating behavior） である。

雄の同性間マウンティングについては，雄が相手を雌と間違えるということもあるだろう。しかしながら，雌の同性間マウンティングについては，その理由が良く分かっていない。
今回の研究結果から，雌の同性間マウンティングは，小さな雌が，大きな雌との闘争を避け，エサを得るための代替的手段である可能性を示唆している。

この中で，動物における "Homosexual" の定義が以下のように記されている。
Homosexual: in animals, this has been used to refer to same-sex behavior that is not sexual in character.
Bailey 氏から頂いたメールによると，雌が代替的手段 （alternative tactics） を採ることが，ますます明らかになりつつある，とのことである。
また，甲虫類の雌による同性間マウンティングに関しては，以下の論文が注目される。<

Maklakov 氏によると，カブトムシのように，雌同士で闘争し，しかもマウンティングする，という種の研究は珍しいようである。
